Part I: the ugly truth of personal care

Every day, women around the world focus on what they are putting into their body and the bodies of their family members.  Different women have different reasons.  Whether it is for the sake of counting calories to hit their goal weight (me) or because they want to live a healthier lifestyle (me) and reduce the amount of preservatives and chemicals they are consuming.

With the increased focus on consumables, health food markets are growing.  Retailers are reacting by offering more varieties of gluten free options, building out organic supplies of fresh fruit and veggies and helping their guest make a conscious effort to live healthier.  I for one am happy to see the change, but wish it wasn’t so expensive!

Anyways, that’s beside the point.  So you might be asking….”What is the point?”  My point is, that although we are all (or most of us) becoming more health conscious in what we eat, we are still blind to other harmful products that we use on a daily basis.

To help put things into perspective here are some not so fun facts…

– Skin is the largest organ and absorbs up to 60% of what you put on it

– The average female swallows 3-7 lbs of chapstick, lip gloss and/or lipstick in their life

– In 26 seconds chemicals in your personal care products enter you bloodstream

– Europe has banned over 1,300 ingredients from being used in beauty products while the US has only banned 11

–  The US has not passed a federal law to regulate the ingredients used in personal care products since 1938

Pretty shocking right?  It was very eye opening to read that most personal care and makeup companies are responsible for what they put into their products with little to no regulation from the government.

Thankfully, there are companies that care and can help you make healthier decisions through education, creating awareness and being honest/transparent.

Be sure to check back later this week because I will be sharing a website that allows you to rate your products based on toxicity.  I will walk you through what I found and will be providing brand suggestions to keep you strong and healthy.  See you soon!
